80% of New Year’s Resolutions fail, based on studies.
Personally, before I discovered this “Hack”, 100% of my resolutions, new year or not, failed. Actually, your New Years’ resolution is a declaration of something you wish to achieve during the year. The only difference between a New Year resolution and any other career or life goal is that you use January 1st as a fresh start for making a significant change in your behaviour.
Hence this hack can also be used to achieve any goal or target that you want. Continue reading if you want to do so!
Without further ado, let’s delve into:
- What this hack is
- Why this hack works
First, I will list the action-steps for this “hack” below. I will then explain why it works.
Action-Step 1 – Write down your goal.
Here are some rules you must follow when writing down your goal!
Rule #1: Write your goal in the positive.
Write down what you want, not what you want to leave behind.
Instead of writing,
“We want to stop being a lousy flyer distribution company in Singapore.”
Write
“We are the best flyer distribution company in Singapore.”
Rule #2: Write in present tense.
Write your goals down in the present tense.
Instead of writing,
“We will become the best flyer distribution company in Singapore.”
Write
“We are the best flyer distribution company in Singapore right now!”
Rule #3: Write your goals out in complete detail.
Make sure you provide as much details as possible.
Instead of writing,
“We are the best flyer distribution company in Singapore right now!”
Write
“We are the best flyer distribution company in Singapore right now, making a profit of $1,000,000 a year!”
Rule #3: Be emotionally involved in the goal
Write down how you will feel as if you have already achieved the goal.
Instead of writing,
“We are the best flyer distribution company in Singapore right now, making a profit of $1,000,000 a year!”
Write
“I am so happy and grateful now that we are the best flyer distribution company in Singapore right now, making a profit of $1,000,000 a year!”
Action-Step 2 – Read & Rewrite what you have written in Step 1 every day
The key to this is repetition. Do this as often as you can. I cannot emphasize this ENOUGH!
Action-Step 3 – Take action on ideas as soon as possible
You will receive inspirations/ideas on how to achieve your goal after step 2. Take actions on them as soon as you can. However, if you encounter resistance (eg. Fear, anxiety, etc…) that are too heavy for you to bear, go back to step 2.
That’s this. This is the “hack”. It is simple, but I wouldn’t say it is easy, which I will explain further down my article.
Why this hack works?
In order to make it easier for me to explain, and for you to understand, I have provided an illustration below.
Now…the most important thing we need to understand here is the Subconscious Mind. First, whatever idea that is impressed upon the Subconscious Mind will be expressed in reality. Once it accepts an idea, it begins to execute it. Without fail. Second, your subconscious mind accepts what is impressed upon it or what you consciously believe. Your subconscious mind is like a bed of soil that accepts any kind of seed, good or bad. Your thoughts are the seeds. So, what does this mean?
Let me explain with an example:
Let’s say if John was told repeatedly since a child, by people who are important to him, that he would be a failure in life, and if he believes it. Guess what happens? John’s Subconscious Mind would be impressed with this idea. As a result, he would fail in whatever he does in life, no matter how hard he works. It is not something John can overcome until he realizes the real “cause”.
Refer to the illustration above, and let’s work through what happened to John. First, he was repeatedly bombarded with an “idea” that he would fail in life. As a child, John had no defence against it. His Conscious Mind was not developed yet. Very soon, this idea was impressed on his Subconscious Mind. Always remember that the Subconscious Mind dictates the actions that you take. If “X” idea is impressed in your Subconscious Mind, it will dictate that you only take “X” actions, resulting in “X” results. If an idea of “You would fail in life” is impressed in your Subconscious Mind, it will dictate that you only take actions of “someone who fails in life”. It is no wonder that John gets the results he gets.
As an adult, our Conscious Mind is developed, which guards our Subconscious Mind. That is why it is hard to change what we have been conditioned since young. And often, it is also because of our ignorance of the real “cause” of our results, that we get struck in this vicious cycle, where we get the same poor results, regardless of what we do and how much effort we put in.
We need to realize the real cause of the results we produce. Results are not the cause of our results. Our thoughts are the cause of our results. For John, the “thoughts” that he would be a failure in life are implanted by other people into him early in life. But we also implant “ideas” that we do not desire into ourselves as well, even when we are adults. Why? It is because of ignorance.
As an adult with a developed Conscious Mind, we can now accept or reject ideas. Therefore, in order to change our results, we need to accept the thoughts that will get us the results that we want, while rejecting thoughts that don’t. We also need to ignore our current results/reality and not let them put negative thoughts into our mind.
To summarise:
Q. What is the real cause of the results that we get?
A. If your current result is “X”, you must have “X” idea impressed in your Subconscious Mind, which leads to “X” type action, which leads to “X” results.
Q. How do we change our results? Or how do we get the results that we want?
A. By changing/replacing the current “idea” impressed in our Subconscious Mind.
Q. How do we replace the current “idea” impressed in our Subconscious Mind?
A. Through repetition of a new idea and being emotionally involved in it.
Q. How do I get emotionally involved in an idea?
A. First, repetition of an idea will help you to believe in it even if you don’t at the start. Belief is an emotion. Second, Rule #3 of writing your goals will assist you in being emotionally involved in it as well. Finally, check out the resources below. Watch it once a day for at least 90 days. Knowledge will provide you faith as you utilise this “hack”.
Q. Are action step 3 necessary?
A. It has been my experience that if the “right” idea has been impressed in the Subconscious Mind, it will lead to the “right” action, which will lead to the “right” results. Therefore, all these occur naturally and without much effort. If you feel resistance (eg. Fear, etc…) to take action, it means the “right” idea has not been impressed in your Subconscious Mind sufficiently. Hence, you need to continue working on step 2. However, taking action while facing resistance will accelerate the programming of the “right” idea to your Subconscious Mind. In conclusion, it is not necessary, but you are encouraged to do so to get faster results.
Now you know the “hack”. Make sure of it to achieve your 2022 resolution(s)!
